MCP Onboarding vs Tango and Trainual: which onboarding tracker to pick

All three turn "we hired someone, now do these twelve things" into a tracked plan. Tango and Trainual are dedicated onboarding products: Tango builds step-by-step guides with screenshots, Trainual documents processes and trains people through them. Ours is a local MCP server that applies a role template to a hire, tracks which tasks are done and which are overdue, and reports progress per hire. The dedicated products excel at authoring and delivering training content; ours is a checklist ledger with no account and no network call.

When to pick Tango or Trainual

Pick them when onboarding is content: you want click-by-click guides with screenshots (Tango's capture-as-you-work is the fastest way to produce them) or a searchable process manual new hires study and complete (Trainual's model). Tango has a free plan and a Pro tier at $15 per user per month annual; Trainual moved to quote-only pricing.

When to pick ours

Pick ours when onboarding is a checklist you must actually run: who has the plan, which tasks are done, what is overdue. Every tool is free for one hire at a time, so a founder onboarding their first employee pays nothing, and the $19 once Pro is only for stamping the same role template onto twenty hires at once. The ledger is local files, the answers come back in chat, and nothing about your hiring lands in a vendor's cloud.

Install lines

Ours, one click: download onboarding.mcpb from the latest release and open it in Claude Desktop. No JSON, no terminal.

Or by URL, with nothing installed. /mcp/connect mints a free token and prints the ready line:

claude mcp add --transport http onboarding https://mcp.zovo.one/mcp/onboarding/t/<token>

The npm package is not published yet, so the line below returns a 404 today. It is here because it is what the config becomes the day that changes:

claude mcp add onboarding -- npx -y @theluckystrike/mcp-onboarding

Exact config file paths per client are on the setup pages.

Questions

Do Tango or Trainual track task completion like a checklist?

Both track completion of their own content (guides or subjects). Ours tracks any checklist you define, per hire, with an explicit overdue view computed from due dates.

Which one is free?

Tango has a free plan and Pro at $15/user/mo annual. Trainual publishes no rates (quote-only). Ours is free for one hire at a time across every tool; Pro $19 once adds only cohort template applies.

Can I onboard several hires at once?

In ours, yes: onboarding_template_apply takes a comma-separated list of hire ids or names, which is the Pro path. Tango and Trainual assign content to people through their own user management.

Where can I read the competitor facts myself?

Tango's plan figures and Trainual's quote-only model are summarized in published 2026 onboarding-software comparisons (effy.ai, minicoursegenerator.com); Trainual's own site no longer lists figures. All read on 2026-09-19.
