Two everyday jobs need encoded images: labelling things (asset tags, shelf bins, inventory counts) and linking things (payment QR codes, Wi-Fi cards, invoice payment links). Both are one tool call with the barcode MCP server, and the output is a PNG file on disk ready to paste into whatever you are building.
"Generate a Code 128 barcode for SKU-4471 and save it as sku-4471.png" writes the image locally. Common one-dimensional symbologies are covered, so label sheets and inventory workflows work without a designer or an online generator with its ads and upload limits. For two-dimensional codes, QR generation handles URLs and structured payloads - the SEPA payment QR guide shows the most useful case: embedding an EPC06 payment payload so a customer scans the invoice and their banking app fills in the transfer.
The practical difference from a web generator is that chat can do the surrounding work in the same conversation: generate 200 barcodes from a list in your spreadsheet, name each file by SKU, and hand back a zip - no copy-paste loop, no upload of your item list to a stranger's form.
One click, with no JSON. Download barcode.mcpb from the
latest release and open it in Claude Desktop. It runs on the
Node runtime Claude Desktop ships with, so your own PATH and node version never come into it.
Or a URL, with nothing installed. /mcp/connect mints a free anonymous token and prints the ready line:
claude mcp add --transport http barcode https://mcp.zovo.one/mcp/barcode/t/<token>
Or from a clone, for a client with no bundle installer. Build once, then point the client at the built file:
git clone https://github.com/theluckystrike/mcp-servers.git
cd mcp-servers && npm install
npm run build -w packages/mcp-license -w servers/barcode
claude mcp add --scope user barcode -- node /absolute/path/to/mcp-servers/servers/barcode/dist/index.js
Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf and Cline take the same two strings as JSON, in
claude_desktop_config.json or the client's own MCP config file:
{
"mcpServers": {
"barcode": {
"command": "node",
"args": ["/absolute/path/to/mcp-servers/servers/barcode/dist/index.js"]
}
}
}
The npm packages are not published yet, so the npx form below returns a 404 today. It is
kept because it is what that config becomes the day the publish lands, with nothing else changed;
installing these servers when npx does not work yet
has the whole picture.
claude mcp add barcode -- npx -y @theluckystrike/mcp-barcode
The pairing that saves the most time is barcodes plus the inventory count flow in the barcode inventory count guide: print labels from chat, scan them during the count, and let the server reconcile counts against the catalogue. Free tier covers day-to-day generation; Pro is a one-time payment per server or part of the bundle.
Yes, with this server installed - ask for a QR encoding any URL or text and it saves a PNG locally. For invoice payment QR codes specifically, see the SEPA guide.
The common retail and inventory symbologies including Code 128 and EAN-family codes, covering label sheets, SKU tags and shelf bins.
Yes - paste or point the server at your SKU list and it generates one file per item, named by the SKU, optionally zipped for download.
