How much do MCP servers cost?

There is no single price for an MCP server. The protocol is free and open - what you pay for is the tools themselves. In practice the market has split into three models, and knowing which one a seller uses tells you what the bill looks like a year from now.

The three pricing models

Free and open source. You clone or npx-install the server, run it locally, and pay nothing. Cost is your own setup time: you manage Node, config files and updates yourself. Most registry listings are this.

One-time license. You pay once per server and keep it for life. These servers are the model here: every server has a free tier you can install and use today, and $19 once unlocks Pro on that server forever. No renewal, no metering, and the license keys work offline via Ed25519 signed tokens - the server keeps working even if this site disappears. $39 once buys all 54 servers, which saves $987 against buying them separately.

Monthly subscription. A growing number of hosted MCP vendors charge $10-30 per month per server or per seat. That is the SaaS model ported to MCP: lower entry price, but $15 a month is $180 a year, every year - more than a one-time license after the first year, for one server instead of 54.

Which model should you buy?

If you will use a server for more than about a year, one-time wins on price alone. If your needs genuinely require a hosted cloud dependency - live data feeds, multi-user sync - subscription is the honest price of that infrastructure. If you are experimenting, start with free tiers: every server here runs free indefinitely at the limits described here, so you never buy something you have not already used.

Buying a license takes two minutes: pick a server on its product page, pay through Stripe, and the license key arrives by email with the exact claude mcp add line to run. There is no account to create.

Questions

How much does an MCP server cost?

It ranges from free to about $30 a month. These servers are $19 once per server (or $39 once for all 54) with a permanent free tier on each - you only pay if you outgrow it.

Is there a subscription?

No. Licenses are one-time and lifetime. The license keys are signed offline, so paid tools keep working without any phone-home.

Can I try before buying?

Yes - every server's free tier is the real server with usage limits, installable the same way. You upgrade only when a limit actually stops you.
